Chemotherapy is the use of chemical substances to treat disease. Today the term mainly refers to cytotoxic drugs used to treat cancer. It can be injected, administered through a vein, delivered orally as a pill or injected into the body. There are different types of chemotherapy treatments available. Combined modality chemotherapy Uses drugs with other cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy or surgery. Combination chemotherapy Very similar to the former treating patients to several different drugs. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (preoperative treatment) This helps to shrink the tumor enabling other methods of fighting the cancer such as radiation therapy and surgery to perform more effectively. Adjuvant chemotherapy (postoperative treatment) This treatment is used when there is little evidence of cancer, protecting against cancer in the future and cancer cells spreading.
Palliative chemotherapy The Palliative treatment is used to prolong life expectancy and reduce tumor load. Possible side effects: Nausea Vomiting Depression of immune system Hair loss Fatigue Memory loss
