Professor Kefah Mokbel is a Consultant Breast Surgeon at St. George’s & The Princess Grace Hospitals and a Professor of Cancer Surgery at The Brunel Institute of Cancer Genetics and Pharmacogenomics. He is also the founder and president of Breast Cancer Hope Charity.
We asked Professor Mokbel a few questions...here's what he had to say:
You are dedicated in your research of breast cancer and in promoting awareness – what are you reasons for specialising in this area? I would like to make a difference to the lives of the large number of women who may be affected by the disease.
You are founder and chairman of the Breast Cancer Hope charity, can you tell us more about your work? Breast Cancer Hope is dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of life in women diagnosed with breast cancer, through funding high quality research in the fields of basic science, prevention, early detection and the treatment of breast cancer. We have already granted funding to support leading researchers in the breast cancer field. We have been also supporting young women undergoing chemotherapy in relation to childcare.
If a woman discovers a lump in self-examination, what should she do? Not panic, most lumps are benign. She should consult her doctor who would refer her to a breast specialist. She can also self-refer to a specialist.
Are there any ways in which a woman can help reduce the risk of getting breast cancer? One way is to alter your general lifestyle:
• Avoid becoming overweight after the menopause. • Undertake regular exercise and increase physical activity (min. 1 hour per week). • Avoid excessive alcohol intake – try not to drink more than 6 units of alcohol per week (equivalent to one glass of wine per day). • Reduce the intake of animal fat and red meat (esp. overcooked red meat) • Eat more fish (excluding farmed salmon) • Replace full-fat dairy products with low-fat dairy products • Increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables especially: cranberries, raspberries, cherries, red grapes, and pomegranates. These fruits can be also taken as fresh juice drinks with no added artificial ingredients (e.g. fresh smoothies). • Increase the intake of green tea. • Increase the intake of olive oil.
Visit my website www.breastspecialist.co.uk for more information on other ways to help reduce the risks. What are the different types of breast cancer? Type 1 - Invasive Breast Cancer: This cancer is more aggressive and has the ability to spread elsewhere in the body and thus cause death.
Type 2 - Non-invasive Breast Cancer: This type is confined to the ducts or lobules of the milk glands. It is a non-invasive cancer and does not usually spread to other parts of the body. However, it may develop into an invasive type if left untreated. The medical name for non-invasive breast cancer is ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) if it occurs in the milk gland ducts (tubes), or lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) if it occurs in the gland lobules. Visit my website www.breastspecialist.co.uk for more information on this. What is a Mammogram? And what happens during the procedure? This is an indepth issues - please visit www.breastspecialist.co.uk for all the info you will need. Do you have any heart-warming stories? Many. This is one of them (click here).
What, in your opinion, makes you a success? Passion for my work.
What has been your biggest challenge? To achieve the perfect balance between my family life and professional life.
