Professor Dan Reinstein of the London Vision Clinic Professor Reinstein, exclusive eye laser specialist for Extreme Makeover UK, and founder of the London Vision Clinic, is one of the few full time Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons in the UK to dedicate his entire professional life to laser eye surgery.
A big thank you to Professor Reinstein for taking the time to answer a few of our questions. How did you become the exclusive eye laser specialist for Extreme Makeover UK? Extreme Makeover was looking for an expert surgeon and I was recommended to them.
What drove you to open the London Vision Clinic? I wanted to establish a medical facility where I could practice medicine to the highest possible standards. I was educated in England, but trained in America, so I began practicing there. However, laser eye surgery technology in America is about two to three years behind the technology available in Europe, so I moved back to London where I could make use of the best technology available in the world.
Do you have plans to open any further Clinics? Yes, we have plans open another facility in London towards the end of 2008.
You have over 15 years of training & experience in your field – do you think there is anything left for you to achieve? Absolutely. I am only 45 so my career still has a long way to go. The field of laser eye surgery is advancing so rapidly and we are so far ahead of where we were just five years ago. We are always investigating new techniques and procedures that can benefit our patients, so I’m very excited about what the future offers.
Is there one outstanding moment of your career to date? The greatest moment is always when you see patients overcome with emotion now that they are finally free of their glasses or contact lenses. As a surgeon, you never get tired of seeing that.
What factors render someone suitable for laser eye surgery? Generally, laser eye surgery is best suited to healthy people with healthy eyes who would like to see well without the aid of glasses or contacts (and that includes reading glasses).
Specifically, laser eye treatment can correct of a full range of conditions, including short-sightedness, long-sightedness, Presbyopia (the need for reading glasses), and astigmatism.
What safety provisions are undertaken with this kind of surgery? While laser eye surgery is extremely safe (often safer than wearing contact lenses) our patient’s safety remains our number one priority.
At the initial laser eye surgery screening, our patients learn if they are suitable for laser eye surgery, and the results they can expect if they decide to have treatment. We consider the initial laser eye surgery screening to be so important that we allow two hours for each prospective patient, to ensure that our staff has plenty of time to go through as much diagnostic testing as required. Our preoperative exam is amongst the most comprehensive eye exams you will ever undergo.
Are there any health factors that would stop someone from having laser eye surgery? Our website www.londonvisionclinic.com contains a list of potentially disqualifying conditions where patients can read about if they have any doubts as to their suitability. Fortunately, for some, certain conditions are only a temporary barrier, and with our help, some of these patients do eventually qualify for treatment.
We are equipped to undertake some of the most challenging laser eye surgery cases, but of course, there are still some people (1-2%) that we cannot treat.
Are you affiliated with any charitable organisations? We are in the process of establishing the London Vision Clinic Foundation and we are also regular contributors to two charities: the British Red Cross and St. David’s Care in the Community.
What do you feel you have left to accomplish in the future? My career is still has a long way to go. I want to establish London Vision Clinic as the leading private eye care facility in the UK while continuing to build our clinical research team and develop our charitable foundation.
What are your views on permanent eyeliner? I see many eye problems that are exacerbated by the use of make up and specifically eye liner. If permanent eyeliner can reduce the need to apply make-up to the eyelid, then that can only be a good thing.
Karen (www.karenbetts.co.uk) has had the procedure done herself - here's what she had to say... “ I have had laser eye surgery and it is one of the best things I’ve ever done! I would recommend the treatment to anyone”. Contact the London Vision Clinic: Tel: +44 (0)20 7224 1005 (9am - 6pm, M - F)

Frankly, I am very satisfied with the eye lashes I have got now, but if I didn't have this luck I would have surely wanted to do such a step.Leave a Reply
